Birds, sea & shore:
Dotterel: New Zealand Dotterel, Rangitoto
This is a northern New Zealand dotterel,
Charadrius obscurus aquilonius
, or tuturiwhatu, one of a pair in their breeding plumage that we saw on the mudflats near Motutapu Island. It's estimated that the population is 1,400. About 27cm long.
