| The sharp, high ridge of volcanic rock in the centre of the beach is the Watchman, or Te Matua, site of an ancient Maori pa or fortified village. The Te Kawerau a Maki tribe lived along this coast until they were decimated and largely driven out in the 1820s by Ngapuhi warriors from Northland who were armed with European muskets. |
