Steam venting from the ground
Craters of the Moon: Steam venting from the ground
Craters of the Moon has been formed by superheated steam forcing its way up and out of the earth. In some places the vents have become blocked by mud, rain or earth movement, resulting in explosive eruptions as the pent-up steam has blown its way out. Various craters here still 'clear their throats' in this manner.
