| Ruatapu means 'sacred cave'. In the bottom is the green 'pool of mirrors' or waiwhakaata. Orakei means 'place of adorning' , while Korako is 'white sinter', so local Maori used the hot pools in the area for personal hygiene and grooming - much warmer than the river! |
