Approaching Kahikatea trees
Whirinaki: Approaching Kahikatea trees
The lower river flats towards the River Rd carpark are covered in ancient, mature podocarp forest, with stands of kahikatea, rimu and totara around 30 metres tall. Forest of this kind has largely disappeared from NZ and nearly did so here too until protesters and conservation groups managed to stop the logging in the 1970s.
