Statue of Wairaka
White Island: Statue of Wairaka
At the mouth of the Whakatane River, this is a statue of Wairaka. There are different traditions, but the basic story is that when the Mataatua canoe first landed here, the men went ashore, but the canoe started drifting away. Wairaka took a line and secured the canoe, saying 'Me whakatane au i au' (I shall act like a man).
