Duck: Blue Duck, Hamilton
Birds, wetlands: Duck: Blue Duck, Hamilton
Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos, or whio, named by the Maori for its whistling call. It?s a torrent duck, and has a rubber-like growth on the end of its bill to protect it from the rocks and boulders it forages around and under to find insect larvae. About 53 cm long. This one lives in the Hamilton Zoo.
