Pohutukawa Tree
Rangitoto: Pohutukawa Tree
Growing on one of the old lava flows. Gradually, moss and lichen colonise the barren rock, building up organic material in the crevasses, and then pohutukawa send roots down to the water table and provide shelter and more dead leaves and soil for other plants to grow in. After 600 years, the process is still continuing.
