Muriwai: Maori Bay
South of the main beach of Muriwai, in the cliffs behind Maori Bay, are great layers of basalt that flowed out from undersea vents on the side of the Waitakere volcano about 17 million years ago. The volcano has long since been worn away by the sea, and its remains uplifted to form the Waitakere Ranges and coastline.
