Carmichaelia australis, or maukoro. Instead of having leaves, broom has flattened green branchlets, so it's quite distinctive. An introduced species of broom grows into a shrub with bright yellow flowers and is a invasive weed, but there are over 40 species of native broom, many of which are grown in gardens.
