| The pou (carved pole) in front of the centre gives part of the whakapapa (genealogy) of the Te Kawerau a Maki iwi (tribe), who were the original inhabitants of these ranges and the coastline. The centre has good displays illustrating the human and natural history of the area, great views across the ranges and the city, and sells parkmaps (vital for bushwalking). |
