| Piha: Lion Rock, Piha Beach |
| Lion Rock, which separates North and South Piha, is an island at high tide, and for centuries was a pa (fortified village) of the local Te Kawerau a Maki tribe. They called it Whakaari. They were driven out some time around the 1820s by Ngapuhi warriors from Northland who were armed with European muskets. The island is now in public ownership. |
